COmmunity Symposium
Oh what a Night!I use Google Forms to gather information from my students. I make a form asking all kinds of questions. From the answers I selected 50 of my 115 students to speak at the symposium. My colleague selected 35 students. This year, my students were schedule so speak in just 1 of the 6 sessions while her students were scheduled to speak in 2 of the 6 sessions. We coordinate the rooms and the kids, share a Google Slide so that they can make their on sign, I print the slides and give it to them with their assigned room. We organize 6 sessions and assign the kids accordingly. Each session is 10 minutes, and the passing periods are 5 minutes. After a brief introduction to the audience, we explain the schedule for the evening and give them about 10 minutes to figure out their schedule and get to their first room. The kids are encouraged to be in their assigned room in the session before they're to present. This helps eliminate the delay between the prior speaker breaking down, and the next speaker setting up. We also happen to coordinate with the art teacher and sanction off one of the hallways to display student art. Tables present their 3d art, and their 2d illustrations decorate the walls. The art teacher gets local artists to recognize 4 pieces of art and those artists are recognized with a certificate. Any student who had an item to sell either for charity or any other purpose, is given a table in the gym to sell their item after the 6th and last session. We gather in the gym where it all started for about 20 minutes, and spectators are given the chance to meet with student speakers, ask questions, and complement them on their work. |
